A practical guide for foreigners in Bali running out of time on their Stay Permit
Bali is where you want to be not for a holiday, not for a season, but for the long term.
Maybe you are retiring here. Maybe you are investing in a business. Maybe your child lives here and you want to be close.
Whatever your reason, there is a tried and tested legal pathway that thousands of expats use every year to establish themselves in Indonesia without rushing, without stress, and without leaving the island.
What Is a Bridging Visa?
A bridging visa — most commonly the Social Visa — is a 60-day stay permit that gives you legal residency in Indonesia while you prepare and submit your long-term visa application.
It buys you time to:
Gather all required documents for your target KITAS
Open a bank account if required
Find your address in Bali
Submit your conversion without any rush or pressure
The Step-by-Step Pathway
Step 1 — Arrive on a VOA or Apply for a C1 visa.
Most visitors arrive on a Visa on Arrival (VOA) — 30 days, extendable once to 60 days. If you already know you are staying long term, apply for a Social Visa before you fly — this gives you 60 days immediately upon arrival.
Step 2 — Extend Your 60-Day Visa If Needed
The C1 can be extended multiple times inside Indonesia, each extension adding 60 days. This gives you a comfortable window to prepare your KITAS documents properly without any rush.
⚠️ Remember: To apply for conversion, your current permit must have at least 30 days of validity remaining. Plan your timeline accordingly. If not have 30 days - need apply Bridging Visa.
Step 3 — Apply Bridging Visa
Bridging visa is a 60-day Stay Permit that gives you legal residency in Indonesia while you prepare and submit your long-term visa application. While legally staying in Bali on your bridging visa, work with your agent to prepare all required documents for your target long-term permit.
Target Visa | Best For |
Retirement KITAS E33F (1 year) | Retirees aged 55+ |
Silver Hair Visa E33E (5 years) | Retirees aged 60+ |
Investor KITAS E28A | Business owners and investors |
Parent KITAS | Parents of Indonesian residents |
Step 4 — Submit Your Conversion Application
Once your documents are ready and your permit still has 30+ days remaining, your agent submits your conversion application to the immigration office. You remain legally in Bali throughout this entire process.
Step 5 — Receive Your New KITAS after photo at Immigration Office.
Can You Do This Yourself?
Technically yes. But when time is short, the margin for error is zero. A missing document, a wrong form, or a misunderstood requirement can push your application back by days – days you may not have.
