You just checked your passport and the expiry date is uncomfortably close. Less than 6 months remaining — which means Indonesian immigration will not accept it for a new visa application, a KITAS conversion, or even a VOA extension.
This is one of the most common problems foreigners face in Bali. The good news is that it has a clear, legal solution — and you do not need to leave Indonesia to solve it.
Why 6 Months Matters So Much?
Indonesian immigration requires your passport to be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay.
This rule applies to:
Visa on Arrival applications
All KITAS applications and renewals
Visa conversions
Extensions of any stay permit
If your passport has less than 6 months remaining, your applications will be rejected before they are even reviewed. Everything stops until you have a valid passport.
The Two-Part Solution
Step 1 — Get a new passport from your embassy in Indonesia↓
Step 2 — Transfer your existing visa/KITAS to the new passport
(this is called MUTASI)
Both steps can be completed without leaving Indonesia.
PART 1
Find Your Embassy in Indonesia
Most countries maintain an embassy in Jakarta and many have consulates in Bali.
The New Passport Application Process
While exact requirements vary by nationality, the general process is:
1. Book an appointment
Most embassies require advance appointments — walk-ins are rarely accepted.
Book online through your embassy's official website as early as possible.
2. Prepare your documents
Typically required:
Your current expired or near-expiry passport
Completed passport application form (from your embassy website)
Recent passport photographs (embassy will specify exact requirements)
Proof of identity (national ID or birth certificate)
Payment for passport fee (varies by country and passport type)
3. Attend your appointment
Bring originals and copies of all documents. Some embassies take biometric data (fingerprints, digital photo) at this stage.
4. Wait for processing
Standard processing times vary significantly: up to 2 months.
5. Collect your new passportMost embassies allow collection in person or offer postal delivery to your Bali address.
💡 Important: Ask your embassy to return your old passport alongside your new one — you will need it for the mutasi process.
PART 2 — The Mutasi Process
What Is Mutasi?
Mutasi (from the Indonesian word for transfer or reassignment) is the official Indonesian immigration process of transferring your existing visa stamp or KITAS from your old passport to your new passport.
Without completing mutasi, your new passport will show no visa — even though your KITAS is still legally valid. Indonesian immigration officers will not be able to verify your status, and you will face problems when travelling.
Mutasi makes your new passport and your existing visa legally connected in the immigration system.
Who Needs Mutasi?
You need mutasi if:
You hold an active KITAS (any type) and have received a new passport
You hold an active long-stay visa stamp and have received a new passport
Your KITAS was issued in your old passport and has not yet expired
You do not need mutasi if:
Your KITAS has already expired (you will apply for a fresh KITAS in your new passport instead)
You only hold a VOA or short tourist stamp with no KITAS
The Mutasi Process — Step by Step
Step 1 — Receive your new passport from your embassy
Do not go to immigration until your new passport is in hand. Confirm your old passport is also returned to you.
Step 2 — Prepare your mutasi documents
Standard documents required for mutasi:
✅ New passport
✅ Old passport containing your KITAS
✅ Your current KITAS pdf (e-ITAS pdf card)
Step 3 — Submit at the local immigration office
In Bali this is typically the Denpasar or Ngurah Rai immigration office depending on your registered address.
Your visa agent can submit on your behalf — saving you time and avoiding language barriers at the counter.
Step 4 — Wait for processing
Mutasi typically takes 3–7 working days. During this time your old passport may be held by the immigration office — keep a certified copy for identification purposes.
Step 5 — Collect your updated documents
Your immigration online record in the national system will be updated and You will receive PDF your new visa ITAS with the mutasi endorsement, confirming that your new passport has been officially transferred.
